SSL708 ~ not the best decision...

Our voyage into the southern extremes of Panama take us to the very remote bay at Puerto Perme, one of the last anchorages before we cross the border into Colombia. Here we find a very unique experience with people used to living in the middle of nowhere by themselves, only visited by the occasional sailboat, and the local supply boats.. one of which, much to our surprise, came in and dropped anchor right on top of us! It was a close night, but luckily very calm weather, so no incidents or collisions during their stay, and next day we were off to the last point of Panama to clear out of customs and immigration.. Puerto Obaldia, also very much in the middle of nowhere!

Thanks as always for watching, and hope you enjoy the video!
Cheers,
Capitan Rick, Maddy, & Ricci

After a brief stop at BTM for some provisions and other necessary arrangements, Captain Rick Moore decided to make a run up to Oala, a beautiful but notoriously difficult anchorage to navigate.

A Quick Pit Stop at BTM

Before departing from their initial anchorage, the team took some time to gather necessary provisions. While there wasn’t much in terms of vegetables at the local market, they did manage to grab a few essential items as well as fresh beer and Gatorade for their journey ahead.

Wind or No Wind, Time to Depart

Sailing under little wind, they took advantage of the calmer seas and prepared for departure. They set their sights on Oala, approximately 8 miles away, planning to arrive by about 8:30 AM.

Into New Territories

As they entered the new anchorage, Captain Rick pointed out several geographical and cultural distinctions of the area. Notably, the borderline between Panama and Colombia lies just over a small hill beyond the town, creating an interesting blend of both countries’ cultures in this remote spot.

The Art of Mola

Included in the video is a glimpse at the fascinating art form known as Mola. These intricate, handmade creations can take anywhere from one week to three months to complete. This traditional craft of the Kuna people demonstrates their artistic heritage and skill.

Navigating a New Challenge – The Swell at Oala

Arriving at Oala, Captain Rick explained that anchoring in this location is not without its risks. Completely exposed to the open ocean, it’s crucial to anchor carefully and be mindful of the significant swell present. Despite having little wind, the sizable waves added an additional element of difficulty.

Checking Out

The main goal in reaching Oala, however, was to check out and leave Panama. As first-time visitors, the crew were eager to experience this important procedure in such a scenic setting.

Richie’s Journey

Throughout their journey, Captain Rick made sure to involve his young son Richie. Whether balancing on the moving boat or exploring new beaches, it was clear that learning and adventure went hand-in-hand for this eager little sailor.

Captain’s Thoughts

As they continued their relaxing sail, Captain Rick reflected on the beauty of the surroundings and his experiences in Oala. While not without its challenges, this serene voyage offered breathtaking views and made for a memorable sailing experience.
