PROTECTING the ANCHOR LOCKER Ep.177 Building my steel sailing yacht
May 24, 2024 by Building SY Mistress | Language: EN Play Time: 00:14:02 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

Welcome back to another episode of Building Sy Mistress! In this video, we dive into protecting your steel sailing yacht’s anchor locker using rubber fittings.
Fitting Rubber to Anchor Locker
In this episode, I take on the task of fixing rubber to my anchor locker. After measuring the pieces and cutting them up with precision, they are then bonded in place using Fixtech’s Fix5.
To ensure the rubber lasts and prevents any water-related damage, I have made sure to leave gaps in the corners. This is because I believe having the corners open allows for better drainage and corrosion prevention.
Anchor Locker Drainage
In regards to anchoring, one of my biggest concerns is the possible accumulation of water in the locker. I have installed a drain hole at the lowest point on the anchor locker, which will need further consideration as the boat continues to be built.
Completing the V-Birth Cabinet Doors
The next task tackled in this episode is to complete the V-birth cabinet doors. After fitting them, they turned out looking very good and fit perfectly.
Fitting the Ignition Switch Panel
To add that finishing touch to the engine bay, I fitted a custom-made ignition switch control panel. This was supported with some bits of timber and epoxy glue.
This panel adds a lovely Rosewood touch to the engine bay and completes another item on our Post-it note list. In total, 8 items have been crossed off this list this episode, keeping us moving forward in building Sy Mistress.
Summary
In this episode, we covered:
- Fitting rubber to the anchor locker with drainage in mind,
- Finishing off the V-birth cabinet doors,
- Fitting and installing the ignition switch control panel.

In this episode I line the anchor locker with REALLY TOUGH rubber to protect the steel - hull, locker floor, bulkhead - especially over the long term; I finish adding ventillation screens and latch handles to the V berth locker doors and get them fitted; and fit a nice Rosewood spacer to the engine box to mount the engine start switch panel in order to protect the wiring on the inside.
Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.
There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!
