Welcome back to Building Sy Mistress! In this riveting episode, we dive deep into the process of getting a survey done for our steel sailing yacht with Simon from Marine Surveys Australia. We cover various essential aspects and fascinating stories from his globetrotting boating and sailboat-building experience.
We’ve covered a lot of ground on Mistress so far, and it’s time to talk about the survey. Simon, an experienced yachtsman, boat builder, shipwright, and marine surveyor, shares his vast knowledge and stories with us. We discuss not only the technicalities of building a steel yacht but also how a professional survey impacts our journey.
From design to execution, Simon has put in an immense amount of effort into building a strong and beautiful steel yacht with impeccable wooden finishings. We explore how this meticulous work impacts the boat’s strength and aesthetics. Furthermore, we delve into the incredible stories behind some of the design choices and personal encounters Simon has experienced over his extensive sailing career.
By the end of this discussion, you’ll gain a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into building a dream sailboat. We commend Simon’s hard work and dedication to creating such an exceptional vessel. Whether you’re an aspiring boat builder or simply enjoy captivating stories about life on the water, don’t miss out on this incredible conversation.
We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on building boats and sailing. Connect with us through social media or our website, and share the episode with fellow enthusiasts.
MAN was I stopped in my tracks!
NOTE - Simon's walk around inspection, both outside on the ground, on the decks and from anchor locker to lazarette and all in between were not filmed as I didn't want to get in his way and he moved quite efficiently in the process.
I suggest to pour yourself a drink of choice, sit yourself down and get comfortable for a lengthy chat between the Marine Surveyor Simon and myself, that spontaneously unfolded whilst Simon was undertaking the FIRST and only ever boat survey done on Mistress!
Many stories also unfolded of Simon's with some of the historical, Worlds 'small sailing craft' legends!
Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.
There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!
