Building SY Mistress has been a long and arduous process filled with countless challenges and victories. In this episode, we dive into one particular challenge that had us pulling our hair out – installing an LPG or propane gas fuel supply system for the stove oven.
The gas install has been quite a journey, with many setbacks and disappointments. We first tried to tackle this task over two months ago, but we’re still not there yet.
Imagine how nice it would be if the information available to the public was accurate and complete so that we could do things right the first time. Alas, that’s not the case.
After multiple attempts and much frustration, we’ve finally found a new gas fitter who seems to know what they’re doing. They’ve provided us with the advice and materials needed to ensure that the install meets all Australian regulations.
We’ve marked a spot on Mistress’s hull for the through-hull fitting and drain for the gas locker. This location is nice and high up, but also lines up well with the bottom of the locker.
By angling the through-hull fitting, we can ensure that any liquids or gases are drained effectively. We’ve used proper sealing methods to protect the area and maintain integrity.
In Australia, it’s not enough to simply install a gas supply; we also need to include gas alarm sensors. Two are required to meet standards.
We’ve installed one at the bottom of the stove oven space, as recommended. The other sensor will be mounted under the bottom of the pantry cabinet and then routed up along the bench and through a bulkhead to connect with the control panel.
With the gas install almost complete, we’re ready for the final inspection and sign-off. Mistress’s launch is imminent, so we’ll have our skilled gas fitter inspect everything and give us that much-needed certificate.
It’s been a long and challenging road, but we’ve finally overcome the hurdles of installing our LPG or propane gas fuel supply system. With the final inspection just around the corner, we’re excited to bring our galley to life.
Thanks for following along on this journey. Stay tuned for more updates and adventures as we build SY Mistress.
The Stove-Oven gas fuel (LPG/Propane) install for Mistress REALLY HAS BEEN a time consuming saga-aka sh#tshow- and one that tested my patience! I stayed sane by just moving on with other boatwork projects over the time taken to FINALLY get this sorted, well, mostly!
There are A LOT of necessary components in this, including the particular Aust. authorities approved "manufacturer only pre-lagged copper pipe"; the electrical install for both the automatic shut-off solenoid and Gas Detector alarm device along with the X2 sensors needing X2 different siting positions; the gas bottle locker drain involving holes being made to both the locker and hull; and I also get a brand NEW stove-oven (as has been the plan for some time) to replace the prior new, but too small, one that I had already installed previously.
Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.
There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!
