Finishing Touches on Building SY Mistress’s Steel Sailing Yacht

In this latest episode of Building SY Mistress, we continue the journey of constructing our steel sailing yacht with a significant milestone – completing and fairing the Dodger. As with much of boat work, there’s an emphasis on detailed effort, and the satisfying part comes when that effort pays off with excellent results. I am thrilled by how the Dodger has turned out following all the hard work that went into it, including fairing, getting epoxy primer and undercoat applied, and ensuring it aligns perfectly with our vision for the yacht.

Effort Leads to Rewarding Results

The process isn’t without its challenges or lengthy episodes; in fact, this episode may seem shorter than usual. But the upcoming videos promise a diverse range of projects inside Mistress, including installing rubber in the anchor locker, completing V berth cabinet doors, panel work both removable and fixed, top coating, applying final clear coats to new stove and oven installations, updating engine cable brackets, and initiating electronic equipment installation. All these efforts contribute to making this episode feel brief by comparison, yet significantly progress towards completion.

The Rewarding Journey

It’s often overlooked the effort required for tasks such as welding. Everything must be meticulously set up. There’s always that risk of something going missing or forgotten – masks, gloves, rods, earthings, etc. Ensuring every detail is right before starting can seem tedious but ensures a smooth process when it finally begins.

Dealing with Heat and Challenges

Working through the heat has its unique set of challenges, especially given the requirement to be fully clothed and often wearing heavy protective gear. The environment feels stifling but necessary for safety purposes. The dedication during such conditions showcases not just physical resilience but also mental strength, pushing forward even with obstacles like excessive heat.

Future Projects in the Spotlight

With this milestone completed, the focus shifts towards various future projects inside Mistress. This variety adds an exciting dimension to the upcoming videos and indicates a steady progression of work despite the varied challenges encountered along the way. It’s reassuring to see a clear plan ahead even with such intricate work on the yacht.

Yes indeed, part 3 on finishing the hard dodger build for Mistress!
Lots of welding, lots of fairing and coving and getting some good, high build epoxy primer-undercoat on it all to seriously protect all of this steel from corrosion ahead!

Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.

There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!
