CUSTOM BOAT PLUMBING INSTALL Ep.179 Building my steel sailing yacht

In this catch-up episode, we delve into the ongoing work on SY Mistress, focusing on the intricate installation of custom boat plumbing for her bathroom area. We also witness the integration of a portable fridge freezer into the vessel’s setup. With raw water vs fresh water usage in toilets at the core of our discussion, we shed light on various components, such as pumps, siphons, waste discharge options, holding tanks, and odor filters.

Installing Custom Boat Plumbing for SY Mistress’ Bathroom

The initial step in this episode involves securing the holding tank and laying out all necessary plumbing. This is crucial for ensuring a smooth operation of the boat’s bathroom facilities, making it comfortable for users. The complex network of pipes, valves, and fixtures are carefully arranged to support both raw water and fresh water options, enhancing efficiency and functionality.

Waste Discharge Options and the Holding Tank

An essential component of the boat’s plumbing system is its waste management features. Here, two distinct methods are outlined: discharging directly into the sea when at anchor or, in restricted areas like harbors, pumping the waste directly into a holding tank. The holding tank can then be emptied where and when it is permissible.

Odor Management with Vitus No Odor Filters

To mitigate any unpleasant odors from the boat’s toilet and waste system, the builder opts for Vitus no odor filters. These are installed as part of the plumbing setup, contributing to a healthier, more pleasant ambiance in the boat’s bathroom space.

Accessing the Holding Tank

A unique addition to the plumbing design is an inspection port installed on the holding tank. This customization enables the easy access needed for cleaning and maintenance, ensuring longevity of this crucial component.

Plumbing in SY Mistress’ Bathroom

The process moves forward with plumbing the sink and eventual shower, ensuring that water can efficiently flow through these fixtures. The final stage of this installation phase is completed, showcasing a meticulously planned system that meets the builder’s specific needs.

Conclusion

The journey of building SY Mistress continues, with this episode highlighting the careful attention to detail and skilled work involved in creating a custom boat plumbing system. Through meticulous planning and expert execution, the builder addresses various functional needs, including waste management and comfort provisions. This intricate process underlines the depth of knowledge required for solo yacht construction.

By demonstrating each step of the plumbing installation, from raw water to fresh water usage in toilets to waste discharge options and odor management, this episode offers valuable insights into boat systems design. For those contemplating liver board yacht construction or interested in understanding boat mechanics more intimately, this segment provides a gold mine of information.

There is A LOT that has to go in to installing Liveaboard boat/yacht plumbing for the head=bathroom services! On a boat the size and purpose of Mistress this is not easy to fore-see all of the things that need to be made up and also items that need to be purchased to get the job done well/properly! So getting this work done to this stage was definitely a, 'work in progress' over several months,...
I also get the 'cool' a.k.a. great albeit temporary Portable fridge-freezer unit installed, because I won't be making Mistress' permanent built in fridge-freezer unit before she will be launched.

Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval architects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.

There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!
