A FREE Cape Dory 28?! Classic Carl Alberg Sailboat Needs a New Home! [[AND SHE FOUND ONE 08/01/2025]]
She’s not perfect—but she is free. This 1978 Cape Dory 28 has classic lines, a full suite of sails, and serious potential. Designed by Carl Alberg and built like a tank, nearly 400 of these pocket cruisers were made. And this one? She sailed last season! The inboard diesel turns over but doesn’t fire (likely the injector pump), so she comes with an outboard bracket just in case. She holds 13 gallons of diesel and 60 gallons of water - not bad for a 28-foot sailboat!
With a little elbow grease, this salty gal could be your ticket to classic cruising. Sturdy, full-keel, and beautiful, Cape Dorys are known for their sea-kindly motion and solid fiberglass layup. This boat can be insured—even as-is! We spoke to insurance expert Paul Miner in Episode #115: The Truth About Sailboat Insurance and learned she’s eligible for a policy as low as $450/year with a replacement value of $7,500.
