SURVIVAL CHALLENGE: Plane Wreck In Crocodile Waters

Welcome to our latest survival challenge, where we’re putting ourselves in the exact position of a pilot who made a crash landing during World War II.

A Perfect Storm

During World War II, nearly 800 military aircraft crashed along the Queensland coast. The pilot of the plane we came across was part of this harrowing tale. In an attempt to make a crash landing in these isolated and remote parts of Australia, he found himself in one of the worst possible spots.

Jumping Right In

We ventured to this same location, armed only with a shirt, sunnies, hat, GoPro batteries, sunscreen, a VHF radio and a knife. The surroundings were anything but welcoming; crocodiles, sharks, stingrays and stonefish filled these treacherous waters.

A Simple Survival Plan

With a knife as our only survival item, we set out to find food, hydration, and the means to start a fire. This location was the perfect setting to mimic the pilot’s exact situation. Despite its dangers, it also had the potential to provide life-sustaining resources if used correctly.

Foraging for Resources

We walked the beaches and found pig tracks, which led us to discover a small piglet – a potential source of food. Along the shores, we came across unopened plastic bottles filled with fresh drinking water, providing a valuable resource in this remote location.

An Unfortunate Pilot’s Tale

As we explored the surrounding area, we learned of an even more tragic tale that took place here. In 1942, a squadron of 11 American planes was forced to make crash landings due to a sudden storm, losing all visibility and communication. Tragically, two pilots died in these crashes.

The Challenge Intensifies

After a tense day of challenges, we made it to the night only to find out that our rescue for the following day had crashed and failed. Now stranded, we built a shelter from the dense leaves surrounding us and prepared to face another day.

An Epic Barra Brings Relief

Despite the hardships, we managed to find food sources such as mud crabs and fish. A lucky catch resulted in a large Barramundi which proved to be a well-deserved meal after facing so many challenges. With water supplies replenished, we felt more hopeful about our survival.

The Plan for Escape

To signal potential rescuers, we left a large ‘S’ on the white sand and rested under the shade while waiting for them to find us. We felt we had made it this far, and our best chance of being rescued lay in the hope that someone would spot our message.

A Grateful End

This survival challenge was an intense experience, and it taught us valuable lessons about resilience in the face of danger. With our perseverance and some fortunate circumstances, we managed to survive and even find food in this treacherous location.
