Ay, yai, yai…. What have we been up to lately? Oh, you know… just breaking our bowsprit and anchor pulpit right off the front of our beloved Varuna, you? It was a terrible and heartbreaking night for us on Varuna.
We were so excited to set sail from Santa Barbara and head back out to the Channel Islands, intending to make our way over to San Miguel to hike with the ranger, see the petrified forest and even visit the sea lion rookeries and researchers! But alas, I guess the best laid plans don’t always work out.
Our first stop after leaving Santa Barbara was Fry’s Harbor anchorage on Santa Cruz Island for the night. We were delighted to have the anchorage to ourselves, and with vague anchoring instructions, nestled right up under the cliffs near the beach.
The excitement didn’t happen until after dark, of course… concerned that we had anchored too close to shore, we decided to readjust the anchor. While hauling the anchor up, our nice little bowsprit gave us a big surprise and scare, cracking right off without any warning! It was quite the shock, and we thought we had a terribly fouled anchor. Well, it turns out the anchor wasn’t fouled at all, the anchor pulpit was just completely rotten inside!
In sinking spirits, we returned to the California coast once again, this time to a boatyard to assess the damage.
