Ever wonder what it feels like to be in gale? Well here’s a little taste!
In anticipation of some impending strong Northwest winds, we take refuge at Smuggler’s Cove on the East end of Santa Cruz Island. Before the wind picks up, we make it to shore to do some exploring around Smuggler’s Ranch and observe some of the remnants of Justinian Caire’s ownership of the island in the form of agriculture and architecture.
We make it back to the boat right as the wind picks up, and really start to get blown around. For our own peace of mind, Ty decides to dive on our new Rocna anchor to check how it is set on the bottom below us, and man is it set well! We hold steady through the night as many drag around us. We make the most of our time though, even doing some snorkel and find a California Spiny Lobster hiding in a cave… it’s our first time preparing a fresh lobster, but it turns out great!
After a few days, we decide to make a run for Santa Barbara. We prepare for heavy weather sailing with a reefed sails. Halfway across the Santa Barbara Shipping Channel, we heave-to in order to avoid a big cargo ship and take a break.
