Steve wakes up to a thin veneer of ice on the harbor, and though it’s getting colder, he’s ditching the shipmate marine woodstove to simplify heating the boat he built from scratch and to gain some stowage space in the galley to make it easier to cook aboard. He’ll keep the hole in the coach roof for a galley vent, though.

Walk with Akiva on a Cape Cod beach, visit the llamas in Granby where it all began, and come back with us to make progress on the broken toe rail by preparing the pieces for scarf joints as soon as it’s warm enough to use TotalBoat epoxy in the ambient outdoor temperature.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard from scratch: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
