Our Ice Cream Is Melting! – Episode 303 – Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

While the weather’s cold, Steve works on any projects he can. The most important task? Saving the ice cream in the freezer. The Sea Frost is on, but the freezer compressor isn’t turning on due to a buildup of ice. The probe that controls the thermostat is covered in ice, preventing the compressor from running when needed. While it’s never a good time for melting ice cream, better for this to happen now than during the summer. At least the cold weather outside can double as a temporary freezer. Steve removes the ice and makes sure all the pieces are back in place so he can enjoy his mint chip ice cream.

Steve also works on installing pulls for the floor to access the water tanks and bilge pumps. The deck gets a touch-up as there were some leaks recently during a night of rain. And Steve spends some time in the engine compartment tidying up the gas lines before tackling another project on the to-do list. While the fate of the label maker may have been uncertain, it seems that this device is imperative to the “honey do” list and lives to see another day.

Get a glimpse of a typical morning on Arabella. Robin tends to wake up before the sun, and usually has a few hours of work done before Steve wakes up. And it wouldn’t be a typical cooking experience without Akiva right there by the stove, ready to eat some bacon.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
