We save even the smallest or thinnest pieces of mahogany from Victoria just in case a piece of scrap wood might be helpful. As we looked to fill the bungs and finish the settee locker, also salvaged from Victoria, we used not just the material, but the thin layer of finish, to make good matches to the already-varnished outside surfaces of the piece.
Steve’s friend Tim Cote has started a boat club at the middle school where he teaches. He walks us through the Chesapeake Light Craft plans that the students are working from, and offers a few thoughts about what mathematics they’re able to use as they build this Eastport Pram.
And finally, the Dickinson Newport heater gets its heat shielding, which is made of tile and cement board. Steve talks about what Dickenson recommended for spacing and materials, then gets to constructing this highly visible piece of “furniture” in the saloon.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38′ wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that he’s built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
