Let’s make some sail covers! Last week, Steve cut used sail material from Victoria in preparation for going to work on the stack pack style sail covers with Paul, a friend of the channel, who answered Robin’s call for help on Facebook. Equipped to sew them with a heavy duty Sailrite machine, Steve and Paul worked together to take Steve’s notes and some new materials to make them into something that will keep the Doyle-designed and Doyle-built sails protected from the elements when the boat’s not sailing.

We also have a look at the coastal flooding during the extreme high tides experienced on the east coast in the last couple of weeks, we move the boat to a new dock where southern winds won’t be pushing Arabella into the dock, and Steve does some hand sewing to button details on the sail covers.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
