Rangitoto Island is Auckland’s most iconic volcanic landmark, New Zealand’s youngest and largest shield volcano, formed by eruptions around 600 years ago. It’s also a pest-free wildlife sanctuary managed by the Department of Conservation, so a walk here means untouched lava fields, native forest and hidden lava caves you won’t find anywhere else in the region, all just 25 minutes from downtown Auckland. Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes, the volcanic lava rock terrain is uneven in places and unsuitable for sandals or jandals. Dress for the weather and bring sun protection, much of the summit track is exposed with little shade.
No shops are located on the island. Please bring your own food and drinks.
The summit walk includes some boardwalk stairs and uneven volcanic terrain. It's entirely optional, if you'd prefer not to make the climb, you're welcome to stay at the base and enjoy the views and surroundings from there.
There are no shops or cafes on the island, so bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen to last the day.
This is a moderate-fitness activity. The return summit walk covers 2.3km each way with an elevation gain of around 260 metres over uneven volcanic lava rock, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. Allow a full day for your Rangitoto visit, including ferry travel.
Rangitoto is a pest-free wildlife sanctuary, so no animals are permitted on the island, and all visitors and their bags will undergo a biosecurity check before boarding the ferry.
