They Had NOWHERE To Run!! | The Tragic Story of SV Fantome

In October of 1998, a 282-foot four-masted schooner called the Fantome sailed into the western Caribbean with 31 crew members aboard and a hurricane building over the horizon. She was a 71-year-old, riveted steel ship with an incredibly gifted 32-year-old captain, Guyan March.

When Hurricane Mitch—one of the most powerful storms ever recorded—stalled and turned directly into the ship's path, the Fantome was boxed in against the Belize Barrier Reef with nowhere to run.

This video is a forensic breakdown of the tragedy: why the official forecast failed a good captain, the fatal physics of a massive ship pushed past its angle of vanishing stability, and the quiet corporate decisions that put the crew in that specific corner of the ocean in the first place. It is a stark reminder that a strong boat is not a safe boat when the calendar and the chart are disrespected.

META’s Aluminum Strongalls

META’s approach starts with thick aluminum plates forming the hull itself, with internal ribs added for stiffness. That construction puts the hull at the center of the boat’s strength and helps explain the appeal of these rugged aluminum boats for offshore sailing. Full Stream: 📗 Get My Book:

The MODX 70: Clever Design or Too Complicated?

The MODX 70 combines electric propulsion with inflatable wing sails, but that complexity raises questions about offshore repairs and long-term maintenance. Moving parts and inflatable systems make for an unusual catamaran, with plenty to consider beyond the boat-show appeal. Full Stream: 📗 Get My...

What This Collision Exposed Inside the Hull

A catamaran backed into an HR 42, destroying the nav station and exposing the hull’s construction. The damaged fiberglass appears dry in places, raising questions about how thoroughly it was saturated with resin during the build. Full Stream: 📗 Get My Book:
