The Factory Forgot a Part on This $2M Yacht (Blue Water 56, Part 2)

The Blue Water 56 is back for round two, and the factory left us a surprise. The anchor was sitting on the dock, the windlass refused to turn, and when I opened the control box I found the problem: the solenoid was never installed. Not failed. Missing. Something tells me nobody ever tested it.

In this episode we finish the commissioning. I install the new solenoid, fix the furler wiring that came swapped from the factory, and rig the ground tackle properly, with a full masterclass on anchor swivels, shackle loading, and lock-wiring so it never comes apart and never cuts a hand. Then the crew from Nance & Underwood tunes the rig in two days flat, and we get the payoff: the first sail of Hull #9, plus why every brand-new rig needs re-tuning under load once the construction stretch sets in.

We close with the full walkthrough: three chainplates per side, the old-school structure almost nobody builds anymore, some of the best stainless welding I have ever seen on a production boat, Manship hatches throughout, and an interior in white oak and teak.

Every Sailor Should Read this Book

Steven Callahan survived 76 days alone in a life raft after losing his boat in the Atlantic. His book, Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea, combines an extraordinary survival story with detailed lessons from life aboard the raft. In my opinion, it is a ditch bag essential: practically a field manual for sur...

Could Your Marriage Survive 117 Days Adrift?

Maurice and Maralyn Baileyโ€™s 117-day ordeal after a sperm whale sank their boat in the Pacific, later recounted in 117 Days Adrift, offers practical lessons in emergency preparedness, resource management, navigation, and resilience. I highly recommend it for any offshore sailors. Full Stream: ๐Ÿ“— G...

META’s Aluminum Strongalls

METAโ€™s approach starts with thick aluminum plates forming the hull itself, with internal ribs added for stiffness. That construction puts the hull at the center of the boatโ€™s strength and helps explain the appeal of these rugged aluminum boats for offshore sailing. Full Stream: ๐Ÿ“— Get My Book:

The MODX 70: Clever Design or Too Complicated?

The MODX 70 combines electric propulsion with inflatable wing sails, but that complexity raises questions about offshore repairs and long-term maintenance. Moving parts and inflatable systems make for an unusual catamaran, with plenty to consider beyond the boat-show appeal. Full Stream: ๐Ÿ“— Get My...

What This Collision Exposed Inside the Hull

A catamaran backed into an HR 42, destroying the nav station and exposing the hullโ€™s construction. The damaged fiberglass appears dry in places, raising questions about how thoroughly it was saturated with resin during the build. Full Stream: ๐Ÿ“— Get My Book:
