S1E59. Installing a Seakeeper Gyro in a Boat… This Thing Is INSANE! 😳
What happens when you put a massive gyroscope inside a boat to stop it from rocking? 😳
Welcome back to Sailing UV! This week I'm dragging you back to work with me for a pretty wild marine installation — we're getting a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer installed in a Chris-Craft.
If you've never seen one of these things in action, the technology is pretty incredible. The Seakeeper uses a high-speed gyroscope to dramatically reduce a boat's roll, but installing one means a lot more than simply dropping it into the engine room.
We're getting the boat prepared for the gyro, including cooling water, electrical power, control wiring and everything else needed to make the installation work.
And because apparently I don't spend enough time folded into tiny boat compartments, we're also climbing into another boat to check the shaft alignment on a Beta Marine diesel repower. 😂
The engine was already extremely close, but we're checking the coupling, dialing the alignment in even tighter, replacing a leaking heat-exchanger fitting, and discovering a few other things along the way.
Of course, Violet makes an appearance too. 🐕 She's dealing with some allergies, exploring the bushes, getting covered in plants, and generally doing what Violet does while I'm trying to get some actual work accomplished.
Meanwhile, our own boat UV — our 57-foot ketch-rigged fiberglass tank — is waiting for us.
UV is a complete project boat that we're slowly rebuilding and refitting with one big goal: getting her ready to begin a circumnavigation. We're not trying to race around the world. The plan is to take our time, explore as much as possible, and bring you guys along for the entire adventure.
And we're getting VERY close to some major UV projects, including:
⚙️ UV's transmission installation
🔧 A ton of upcoming refit work
⛵ The long-awaited full boat tour
🌎 Preparing UV for eventual circumnavigation
🐕 And whatever chaos Violet creates along the way

Operating under the channel Sailing UV, he and his 100lb Doberman, Violet, are currently executing a massive technical refit near Sausalito.
