S1E58 . We Had to Repower This 50FT Race Boat Before It could sail in the Transpac to Hawaii
A 50-foot offshore racing sailboat needs a NEW ENGINE—and suddenly we're on a deadline to get her ready to race to HAWAII. ⛵🌊
Welcome back to Sailing UV!
This week I'm dragging you back to work with me for one of the coolest projects we've had on the channel yet: a Santa Cruz 50 repower.
These Bill Lee-designed boats are lightweight offshore racing machines, and this particular Santa Cruz 50 isn't spending retirement sitting at the dock. She teaches people how to sail and race—and she's headed back across the Pacific.
There was just one little problem…
She needed an entirely new engine first.
What started as a straightforward repower quickly turned into a race against the clock when we found out the boat needed to be finished in time for the Transpac race from California to Hawaii.
So the old diesel has to come OUT.
The engine compartment gets gutted and cleaned up.
New exhaust, fuel plumbing, electrical, controls, insulation and engine beds go in.
Then we use an absolutely awesome old-school marine crane to lower the new Beta Marine diesel into a very tight Santa Cruz 50.
And eventually…
we get to find out if the thing actually works. 😂
There were definitely a few complications along the way—including corrupted footage, cramped spaces, questionable camera work and the usual chaos—but that's boat work.
And yes, we eventually get this lightweight racing machine back out on the water under its own power.
Meanwhile, our own boat UV, our 57-foot ketch-rigged project boat, is waiting patiently for her turn.
We're continuing to refit UV piece by piece with the eventual goal of setting off on our own circumnavigation—with Violet along for the ride, of course.
We're not interested in racing around the world.
We want to experience it.

Jonathan sold everything in Ohio to purchase a neglected 1996 Henry Morgan 57 in the Northern California. Operating under the channel Sailing UV, he and his 100lb Doberman, Violet, are currently executing a massive technical refit near Sausalito. As of 2026, the project focuses on heavy electrical diagnostics and advanced gyro stabilization before attempting a global circumnavigation.
