Real sailing isn’t always thrilling — sometimes it’s slow, quiet, and just passing the miles. But the destination makes all the difference.
In this video, I take my electric boat from Monopoli to Otranto, spending a few days sailing calm, uneventful passages along the Italian coast with questionable anchorages. The trip has long days, but it's easy going, with some small, harmless mistakes that are part of the journey.
But then I arrive at Otranto, my favorite stop ever! An absolutely stunning place with crystal-clear water and breathtaking views. It’s the kind of destination that makes all those slow days at sea completely worth it.

Sailing Electra
In late 2021 we bought a 1976 Catalac 9M catamaran sight unseen that had been wasting away on land for years. Flew to Europe to go check it out and discovered the engines were seized, the wiring a death trap and every through hull valve crumbled when touched. I'd been building ebikes and scooters for years and decided I'd repower it as an electric. My wife and I spent 4 months peeling away all the rot, and pulling out all the wiring so we could start again from scratch. Eight months of very hard work in some icy cold weather and the boat was finally ready for the water. It now has two 6kW electric outboards, 3200W of solar and a 14.4kwh lithium battery bank. We've taken it from Croatia where we bought it, to Venice and then all the way through Croatia, back to Italy and now to Greece where we are today. We run everything off solar, the motors, cooking, making water and heating it, we even have a washing machine and dishwasher! We love this boat 🙂
