Our electric boat just got faster!
In this episode, we take our first trip off the season on our solar powered boat, heading toward the charming town of Vonitsa.
Somehow it seems like we're faster this season, and I try to figure out why.
Later with 35 knot winds on the way, we make the call to pull anchor and find safer shelter. What follows is a tense anchoring session, in a quiet bay that turns out to be one of the most special places we’ve ever visited… a bay filled with rays gliding beneath the surface.
This is what we love most, turning electrons into real adventures.
Sailing Electra
In late 2021 we bought a 1976 Catalac 9M catamaran sight unseen that had been wasting away on land for years. Flew to Europe to go check it out and discovered the engines were seized, the wiring a death trap and every through hull valve crumbled when touched. I'd been building ebikes and scooters for years and decided I'd repower it as an electric. My wife and I spent 4 months peeling away all the rot, and pulling out all the wiring so we could start again from scratch. Eight months of very hard work in some icy cold weather and the boat was finally ready for the water. It now has two 6kW electric outboards, 3200W of solar and a 14.4kwh lithium battery bank. We've taken it from Croatia where we bought it, to Venice and then all the way through Croatia, back to Italy and now to Greece where we are today. We run everything off solar, the motors, cooking, making water and heating it, we even have a washing machine and dishwasher! We love this boat 🙂
