What a privilege this was!
These gray whales come to the Baja of Mexico from Arctic waters, traveling over 10,000 miles round trip to mate and have their babies in this bay. For over 50 years, these unique whales have been gently and gracefully interacting with humans. They do this only in these bays, and the locals have, in turn, created sanctuaries for them where no one fishes, the water is clean and only a handful of authorized operators are allowed to boat.
After a 5 minute panga ride from shore, we just drifted and let these curious majestic mammals come to us. And come to us they did! We were surrounded within minutes by mammas and their babies. They would spy hop and check us out, rub their backs on the panga and nudge their babies up for them to get a closer look at us.
The tour operators do not feed or bait the whales. If the whales didn't want to interact with us, they wouldn't have. Fortunately for us, today they wanted to, for nearly 2 hours!
