Leo Sampson, the man behind Sampson Boat Co, recently embarked on a fascinating journey that involved installing a Capstan on his beloved wooden sailing boat. If you have ever wondered about how to protect cast iron parts of boats or are keen on understanding more about traditional boating practices, then this video is for you.
Protecting Cast Iron Boat Parts
The first significant part of the project was coating the Capstan – made of cast iron. The primary method for protection from rust was through a layer of zinc and paint. Leo opted for flam spraying, a process where hot, molten zinc is shot at the pieces using specialized equipment. This technique ensures that the Capstan remains robust against the harsh marine environment.
The Sail with All Five Sails Set
The second major aspect of this episode involves sailing Taho, Leo’s boat, with all five sails set. While the usual cruising includes using the mainsail, jib, and staysail (the working sails for various conditions), the addition of the topsails adds a unique twist to their journey. The topsail sits above the main sail while the flying jib goes at the end of the bowsprit.
Installing the Capstan
The process to install the Capstan involved creating a wooden plinth or pad upon which the Capstan base would sit. Made of Teak, this plinth required precision and meticulous measurement-taking for perfect alignment. Leo created a template to ensure that the main shaft and control mechanisms aligned correctly with the deck.
A Complex yet Rewarding Task
Throughout the process, Leo emphasized how intricate the task was – requiring precise measurements and careful installation of parts. However, it was evident that Leo derived immense satisfaction from the completion of this project. This video showcases not just technical boating knowledge but also the passion behind preserving vintage wooden boats.
