DIY WATER & POWER in a Tiny Home on Wheels

Electricity & water do not mix! ⚡💦But this episode we work out how to do have BOTH in our tiny home on wheels, as we fumble through our DIY electrical and plumbing installation!

In episode 5 https://youtu.be/kCPOYv-JRPw we walked you through our tiny-home design where we explained our plans for our kitchen and wetbath. We of course needed to run water to those tiny living spaces from our water tank. But the plans included a very exciting component that we didn’t mention..

🚿HOT WATER ON DEMAND!

For the past year and a half James and I had been living tiny without running hot water. We had been boiling little pots & kettles on the stove to wash dishes & hands (not armpits – we did have access to a shower haha).

So we were absolutely STOKED at the thought of having hot water in our tiny-home on wheels – with just a simple turn of the tap! 🛁

💡Another exciting component of our tiny-home build was of course, having POWER! (candles are nice but it was 2021. We’re not living in the dark ages). At this point in our tiny home build we were planning to be plugged-in, meaning we weren’t yet thinking about any off-grid components🔌

But running our electrical was still a little tricky. Since we didn’t do a ‘shell-off’ Airstream restoration, we couldn’t hide the electrical wires behind the skins (walls).

But we had mapped out a plan to run all of our electrical wires underneath the cabinetry, which meant the wires had to be run before we could anchor the cabinetry down to the floor and install our countertops in our tiny home 🚌

We had dabbled in a teeeeny bit of electrical during our van-life builds but this was a power level up from that!

Installing electrical can be dangerous! So we consulted with an electrician before, during and after the install and we would recommend you do the same if you’re planning on a DIY electrical install yourself!

WHO WE ARE

We are a couple from opposite sides of the world making life together in a teeny-tiny 160 square feet.

Our current tiny home is a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the woods here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest! We like to call her Streamy, our adventure basecamp!

Sounds dreamy right? Well let us tell you that it isn’t as easy as it looks & the process of building our dream tiny home on wheels (in just 60 days) was freaking hard!!!

When we’re not enduring these self-imposed suffer-fests (i.e. our DIY projects & long grueling hikes up mountainsides) you’ll find us out on the ocean, living and sailing around the PNW on our little sailboat. She’s a Catalina 30 and we’ve been enjoying the challenge of restoring her & teaching ourselves how to sail!

OUR STORY

I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago.

A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we’ve been given.

Viewing TIME as our most valuable gift, we’ve been feeling an urgency in our lives to Live All Out!

We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality.

This is the beginning of our YouTube journey & over the next few weeks we will be sharing our first steps towards making full-time adventure possible.
