We don’t have built in AC on our boat and frankly I’m glad. It adds complexity, is power hungry and if you have the whole boat air conditioned you tend not to acclimatise to where you are and end up inside rather than out enjoying the wonderful places we visit.
However for the last few years in the Med we’ve had heatwaves that have made sleeping very difficult in high summer and we are now heading for the tropics so things can only get worse!
Or maybe not…
Until recently AC was something you could only really have at the dock on shore power, or by running your generator, things we don’t do. However there are now some excellent low draw, high capacity portable AC units on sale so we decided to do some testing.
This unit from EcoFlow is definitely the best we’ve found so far. It has its own battery and can also be run from our EcoFlow solar power stations. So we can charge the unit during the day at anchor with a solar panel on deck and then run the unit all night so it’s completely self sustaining and very effective giving us the large aft sleeping cabin at the perfect temperature and humidity.
