What do you do when a medical emergency strikes and you’re miles from the nearest hospital? In this intense episode, Pat undergoes an emergency minor surgery right in the aft cockpit of our Nordhavn, Noeta. With no way to get to town, we had to rely on the incredible skills of a boat neighbor who happens to be a doctor to perform the procedure under the sun. This experience was a massive wake-up call for us, so we’re also doing a deep dive into our offshore medical kit. We’ll show you the essential supplies every liveaboard cruiser needs for remote medical care, from trauma supplies to medications, and share the lessons we learned about being your own first responder while cruising the Baja. This is the side of trawler life no one talks about, but everyone needs to be prepared for!
Below are some considerations for a medical kit. Remember....WE ARE NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS! We have spoken to many doctors and attended medicine at sea workshops, but this is just what works for us. Speak with your doctor about your own needs for your own kit.
*Keep a laminated list of ailments and medicines taken and allergies for each crew member.
Don't forget about medication and tools for your cruising kids and pets!
