🐾 When Macy’s Had Dobermans on the Night Shift…
Imagine walking into Macy’s after closing time in 1950s New York. The lights are dim, the aisles are empty, the mannequins stand silently behind the counters—and somewhere in the enormous store, you hear the footsteps of a Doberman.
Beginning in 1952, Macy’s famous Herald Square department store employed a team of trained Doberman Pinschers as part of its nighttime security operation. Four dogs patrolled the store’s roughly two million square feet, working alongside security guards while the city slept.
Their names were almost as memorable as their job: Mom, Suzy, Red Star, and Cash. They lived in kennels on the roof and were trained to patrol the vast store, deter intruders, and respond to their handlers.
A 1953 New Yorker article described the eerie experience of following the dogs through the darkened department store after hours. By 1954, the dogs were even featured in photographs by Look magazine, turning Macy’s unusual security team into a genuine piece of New York folklore.
And apparently, they were pretty good at their jobs. Macy’s security director reported that after the dogs were introduced, prowlers became a much rarer problem.
So before cameras, alarms, and modern security systems, Macy’s had another solution: four Dobermans, a few security guards, and two million square feet of empty department store to patrol.
Now THAT was a night watch. 🐕🦺🌙🏬
