Watermaker Installation Disaster on Sailboat Joko

Sailing enthusiasts aboard the Hallberg Rassy 352 sailboat, Joko, embarked on a significant project to upgrade their watermaker system. As shared in a recent Sailing Joco video episode, the journey was far from smooth, marked by challenges and setbacks that could have dampened the spirits of less determined sailors.

The Project

Recognizing the need for a more reliable and efficient watermaker system, they decided to replace their existing membrane housing. The chosen replacement was from Cruz Aro, known for its high-quality components that included stainless steel screws and aluminum end caps.

Encountering Rust Inside a Stainless-Steel Housing

In a surprising twist, upon opening the old housing for the replacement, they found substantial rust inside what was supposedly constructed of stainless steel. This discovery left them perplexed and questioning the build quality of their boat’s parts.

MacGyvering a Solution

To prevent further issues, Jeff, known for his problem-solving skills, meticulously fabricated new brackets. The pressure was on to install the new membrane housing successfully to maintain their sailing adventures’ self-sufficiency in freshwater production.

The Quest for Perfection

Yet, another challenge arose as no O-rings were included with the new housing, essential for sealing it back up. This setback led to feelings of being backed into a corner and facing the kind of bad luck that sailors dread.

Moving Forward

The Sailing Joco team, undeterred by these challenges, decided to temporarily resolve the issue by sealing with plastic bags and tape. This makeshift solution allowed them to operate the watermaker but only on fresh water.

Lessons Learned

The experience underscored the importance of maintaining one’s vessel diligently and the unexpected complications that can arise. Despite these setbacks, they found humor in the situation and the supportive community of Bequia.

Limited but Memorable Time in Bequia

Though focused on their project, the sailors did take a brief respite to experience some of the island’s charms. These included trying out local street food, enjoying cold beers, and exploring small town life. Their experiences further highlighted the warm welcome sailors receive on Bequia.

Sailing Joco’s Journey

The saga of replacing and upgrading their watermaker system on board Hallberg Rassy 352 sailboat Joko encapsulates the spirit of adventurous boating. It highlights the importance of problem-solving skills, resilience, and the support from a vibrant community like that in Bequia.

Looking Ahead

As they continue their journey, Sailing Joco encourages viewers to learn from their experiences, apply them to their own sailing adventures, and always be ready for unexpected twists. Their tales of trials, humor, and overcoming obstacles have become a staple of the sailing community.
