Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.
This week we unashamedly start with a promo for the fabulous Superyacht Cup in Palma Mallorca. Kate and her team will, once again, host the cup June 21 to 24 where over a dozen prospective entries have declared an interest in joining the superyacht festival with racing on the Bay of Palma, including a trio of the awe-inspiring J Class yachts.
Alongside likely 2023 returnees Velsheda and Svea, is Lionheart, last seen at Super Yacht Cup in 2014 when she took three race wins – including a dead heat finish – on the way to the top of a five-strong J Class fleet.

There is a new trend in sailing, High Altitude conditioning!
Firstly this month Aussie legend, Sun Hung Kai Scallywags David Witt was seen testing his lung capacity with a trek to the Everest Base Camp.
Then this week Maxime Sorel, 36, accompanied by Ngima Gyaljen Sherpa, reached the summit of Everest (8,848 meters) on Thursday May 18. He becomes the first man in the world to have completed a Vondée Globe “the Everest of the seas”, Solo Round the World, non-stop and without sailing assistance, and Everest, the roof of the world located in Nepal.
Leg 5 of The Ocean Race is a flat out sprint across the Atlantic, and our report for Day 3 – Leg 5, Newport to Aarhus, finds Will, on Malazia, checking their position where he thinks that they are about above the Titanic is, just near the “Ice” Line. So it’s warm gear on at 25 knots.

The Swan Sardinia Challenge delivered spectacular conditions and close racing for the owners and crews competing in the second instalment of the season-long The Nations League 2023.
Teams in the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36 one-design classes gathered in Villasimius on Sardinia’s dramatic southeast coast, with the ClubSwan Racing family
At the morning briefing for day three of the TF35 Geneva Cup, there was uncertainty as to whether the forecasted wind would hold on long enough to allow for a full racing schedule. However, with 10- 15 knots on the racecourse as the boats hit the water and the sun never quite managing to burn through the cloud cover during the afternoon, the breeze held on to allow five spectacular races.
On Biotherm there is a conundrum. What do you do when you have two sailors with only one pair of sea boots?
Well first off make sure that the sailors are on different watches. Then make sure that they are of the same sex.
This is how it’s working on Paul Meilhat’s Imoca in the Ocean Race.
French Sailing Superstar and previous winning Volvo skipper Charles Caudrelier has joined the Holcim PRB team for Leg 5 of The Ocean Race.
Here are some of his thoughts on the race.
In stark contrast to the last three days when Lake Geneva delivered a brisk 10-15 knot breeze and a solid 5-race per day program, the final day of the TF35 Geneva Cup, hosted by Société Nautique de Genève, had to be put on hold due to a lack of wind. Sadly, with the wind remaining evasive at 14:00, the decision was made to abandon the day.
Winner of the TF35 Geneva Cup, Esteban Garcia’s Realteam Sailing co-skippered by Jérôme Clerc, had an excellent week, winning over half of the races sailed. The highlight was six consecutive victories over Friday and Saturday.
