Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.
Sailing these America’s Cup boats is like tuning a musical instrument. If all is not in fine tune then anything can happen. Well it did this week for the British Americas Cup Challengers, as the boat suddently launched itself out of the water, leaping skyward. We bet that increased the crews heart rate!
In Auckland, local video shooter, Justin Mitchell, is once again the “man-on-the-spot, as the Emirates Team New Zealand’s jib exploded at the tack’, in 19 knots of wind, as it was under extreme load.
Luckily no one was hurt.

Golden Globe Sailor Ian Herbert-Jones was rescued from his crippled yacht Puffin last week, and he is on a Taiwanese Fishing Boat headed to Cape Town. He was slightly battered, and the transfer went well. This is his first call to Don McIntyre at race headquarters in France. Puffin, we believe, is adrift in the South Atlantic.
It is said watching Sailing is like “watching grass grow,” but not in Palma last week, as the INEOS crew had a heart thumping experience, as their boat decided to leap out of the Bay of Palma and launch itself skywards.
That’s heart stopping stuff!

Racing for Day 1 of the 47th Etchells Worlds in Miami was abandoned.
The chance of severe storms was very high last Monday ,with lightning strikes, squalls and possible water spouts forecast to move across the racing area.
After the cold front moved through overnight, Tuesday allowed some racing and the rest of the weeke was looking reasonable to allow for a successful championship.

After GUYOT’s hull delamination in The Ocean Race, this has also become a top priority check for their race boat.
The world’s top match racing skippers returned to Long Beach this week for the 58th Congressional Cup-Regatta, presented by Long Beach Yacht Club, and a premier event on the prestigious World Match Racing Tour. The Congressional Cup is one of the most regarded, and long-running match racing events in the sailing world.
