Drinking Rum Where Pirates Once Drank | Anchored In History Then & Now | Winded Voyage4 | Episode 74

This is one of the best anchorages in Cape Verde. But a good anchorage is only as good as your anchoring, so I go down and check. As well I check out Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The location of the anchorage. One of the most significant places of history in Africa. Where pirates wreaked havoc and pillaged long before doing so in the Caribbean. Where the dark ages of African colonialism began. Where battles were fought between colonial powers and pirates and resulted in what is said to be eighty sunken ships in the deeper waters of the bay. Cidade Velha is a fascinating historic location and a calm protected anchorage. If you ever get the chance to sail to Cidade Velha, you’ll be anchored in history then and now.
