Exploring Banerman Castle Island – A Unique Water Adventure

Sailing through the Hudson River, we stumbled upon a remarkable gem called Bannerman Castle Island. Located on the Pollopel Island in New York, this abandoned military fort is an intriguing site that offers visitors a glimpse into history and nature’s beauty.

The Journey to Banerman Castle Island

Having cruised down the Hudson River from Athens, we were eager to explore a new destination. The last two days in Athens provided a refreshing break before continuing our adventure towards Bannerman Castle Island. This decision allowed us to stop at the historic area and work on various projects along the way.

Navigation Challenges

The journey to the island showcased our navigation skills, especially with the shallow waters near Pollopel Island. Our anchorage spot offered a calm and serene atmosphere, although the anchor struggled to hold firmly due to the jagged underwater terrain. However, the beauty of the surrounding area was undeniable.

Bannerman Castle Island’s Historical Significance

Bannerman Castle Island holds a unique historical importance as it was once an abandoned military fort. Originally constructed by Francis Bannerman VI in the early 1900s to store surplus military equipment, the site now showcases remnants of its past glory.

Exploring the Castle

Despite not being allowed on the island due to safety concerns, we enjoyed taking in the breathtaking views from a distance. The partial collapse of some sections adds an eerie charm, making it clear why maintaining safety is paramount for visitors.

Nature’s Beauty

Surrounding Bannerman Castle Island are picturesque landscapes that evoke feelings of being in a foreign country. The cliffs, mountainous backdrop, and pristine waters make the journey well worth it for those who appreciate natural beauty.

The Unique Adventure

Exploring Banerman Castle Island presents a rare opportunity to step back in time while embracing the charm of untouched nature. Our experience highlighted not only the importance of preserving historical landmarks but also the thrill that comes with navigating through unique waters and admiring the scenic beauty.

Encouragement for Further Exploration

If you’re intrigued by this adventure, consider visiting on a Saturday or Sunday when guided tours are available. Remember, the experience of witnessing Bannerman Castle Island’s beauty and historical significance can’t be missed.

Our Next Steps

Although we encountered navigational challenges on this journey, our experience left us yearning for more. We will continue to explore other lesser-known gems along the coast and share these unique stories with you.

We got our mind blown. We found the most scenic anchorage along the Hudson River. Mountains surround us and it's right next to the ruins of Bannerman CASTLE. We even get to try General Montcalm's donuts' recipe. Filmed in October 2023.

If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up!
