After a couple months in their new location, the chickens got an unexpected visitor. From stories we’ve heard from different friends in the area, it seems like we got incredibly lucky that things weren’t worse, but it was still a sad day for the family. It’s been a long process learning how to live on this mountain, but we made a lot of progress this past week upgrading the fencing surrounding the coop. I’m happy to report that as of filming this video we haven’t had any daytime visitors to the area, though the trail cameras are picking up lots of coyotes and foxes in the night. Until the ground fully thaws I’m not sure how to improve the fencing without burying it, so we shall see if the chickens make it through the winter/spring. The way the coop is designed, however, means that once the metal gate goes down for the night, it’s almost impossible for an animal to get into the coop. If the fencing proves inadequate, our plan will be to relocate the chickens back to their original home next to the shipping containers, where our dog Freja was doing an incredible job keeping them day during daylight hours.
Big love,
Lou, Dana, Max & Freja
