CAN YOU LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IN 7 DAYS?

Learning a new language in one week is a massive undertaking, but with this challenge I wanted to see if it was possible to learn enough basic Greek to talk to a stranger and ask them if I could draw their portrait–all in just seven days, starting from ZERO!

Obviously fluency in a foreign language takes longer than a week, but the goal of this challenge was to see how much language learning I could cram into 7 days, and how far that effort would take me–could I strike up a conversation with a stranger on the street and get them to agree to a quick portrait drawing? At first it didn’t seem possible… Before this week, I would have said “that’s impossible!”

Quick backstory: I wanted to learn Greek because Lou and I are going to be spending our entire summer in Greece living out our van life dreams of sunshine and endless beaches. And while learning a new language can definitely be overwhelming, I think if you make your goals attainable and specific you’ll be shocked at how much you can learn in a short amount of time.

The way languages are taught in school seems to focus so much attention on reading and writing, and I decided to do the exact opposite. Focus all my attention on speaking, simple get to know you phrases, and put all my effort towards a specific conversation – can I draw your portrait and are you alright with me filming.
