Why I recycle plastic trash whilst living on my sailboat in remote areas

As professional marine documentalists, we often find ourselves exploring the most stunning and remote places on our sailboats. During these adventures, it is impossible to ignore the heartbreaking scenes where beautiful beaches and pristine waters are marred by plastic waste. For WhiteSpotPirates, this issue is a strong reminder that we are all connected by the same oceans, and share the responsibility of taking care of their health.

In an effort to contribute positively to the communities we visit, WhiteSpotPirates participates in cleanup activities and recycling initiatives while sailing. This approach not only helps to preserve natural playgrounds but also inspires others in the cruising community to join them in making a positive impact.

Many coastal areas, like Puerto Maro, have little to no trash removal or recycling infrastructure, resulting in significant plastic pollution along shorelines, rivers and streets. To address this issue, WhiteSpotPirates has conducted several recycling workshops and reached out to potential partners for setting up a community recycling workspace.

During one of their visits to the area, they set up an improvised recycling workspace next to Maria’s sailboard shop, where they experimented with extruding plastic beams to create furniture. They have been successful in creating a prototype for a small foldable chair and hope to improve upon it based on feedback from their audience.

WhiteSpotPirates’ mission doesn’t stop at just recycling plastic waste but also educating others about the importance of preserving natural environments while cruising. In an episode titled ‘Why I recycle plastic trash whilst living on my sailboat in remote areas’, they share insights into how to recycle plastic, transforming waste into jewelry and creating new products from recycled plastics.

Their latest initiative involves conducting environmental workshops at picturesque locations like Pink Amoro – a coffee plantation ecotourism resort. By collaborating with local women who are eager to learn recycling techniques, WhiteSpotPirates aims to inspire them towards starting their own recycling business ventures in the future.

Steps to start plastic recycling on sailboats

To initiate plastic recycling while cruising remote areas, consider these steps:

  • Contact local communities to discuss waste management issues and explore possibilities for collaboration in recycling initiatives.
  • Conduct workshops and seminars to educate people about the importance of reducing plastic waste and techniques to recycle it creatively into usable products like jewelry or furniture.
  • Collaborate with fellow cruisers who share a similar passion towards preserving natural environments. Together, you can contribute significantly to the cause.
  • Establish partnerships with recycling plants in nearby towns for proper disposal and repurposing of waste plastic collected during cleanup activities.

By actively participating in recycling initiatives while cruising remote areas, we can create a ripple effect of sustainable practices that not only help the environment but also positively impact the communities we visit.

The power of collective efforts

This volunteer work showcases WhiteSpotPirates’ deep-rooted sense of responsibility towards our oceans and highlights how individual actions, when combined, can make a significant difference. Whether it’s participating in cleanups or organizing workshops on plastic recycling techniques, each step brings us closer to preserving these natural wonders for future generations.

In their own words: ‘Together we can be part of the solution’ – emphasizing the importance of collective efforts towards making our cruising lifestyle even more meaningful and sustainable.

Final thoughts

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with your personal waste on a sailboat or how to dispose of it responsibly in areas without proper infrastructure, remember that these are issues we all face as cruisers. It’s not only our responsibility but also an opportunity for us to be part of the solution by participating in cleanup activities or recycling initiatives while traveling.

The journey towards reducing plastic waste and creating a more sustainable cruising lifestyle may come with its fair share of challenges, but it is undoubtedly worthwhile when we see local communities embrace these practices wholeheartedly. Let’s keep exploring new ways to contribute positively wherever our boats take us.

Ahoy everyone!

My name is Nike and I have been living and sailing on my sailboat Karl since 2013. After a massive refit marathon, I finally cast off the lines and learnt to solo sail my 37-foot Reinke Super 10 that I called "Karl". I am publishing videos (at the moment every two weeks) about the ups and downs of living, repairing and sailing my boat.

Since January 2022, I have a new permanent crew member: my furry friend Boga. When I started out, I did not know much about boat repair or solo sailing. Since I am still out there, I hope that my story inspires others, to chase their dreams, even if they might think they are not cut out for it. There is always a way, so I'll see you out there!
