Off the Boat, right into Trouble: Skanky Hotel, Exploring Ruins, and Border Control Issues

WhiteSpotPirates’ marine documentalist Carl embarks on an unforgettable adventure to the archaeological site of Isa, nestled in the state of Chiapas near the Guatemala border. Isa holds crucial significance as it serves as the bridge between two civilizations – the Olmec and the Maya. This exploration uncovers the mysteries surrounding the birthplace of the sacred 260-day ritual calendar.

Transforming a Hotel Room into a Recycling Workshop

In nearby Puerto Madero, Carl sets up his base in a rather ‘skanky’ hotel room. Despite the less-than-ideal accommodations, he quickly transforms it into an efficient recycling workshop, preparing for the visit of his talented tech friend Andy from Seattle, Washington.

Andy’s Contributions and Boat Projects

With Andy’s help, the pair tackle various projects simultaneously. This includes editing, working on the CNC mill, conducting recycling workshops in the local town, and focusing on boat repairs such as fixing Carl’s Rudder bearing.

The Journey to Archaeological Site Isa

The team sets out for the archaeological site of Isa, which lies about 30 minutes away from their location. The area consists of numerous private plots leading to legal disputes and restrictions on accessing some sections.

Exploration in Section B and the Intricate Carvings

The expedition leads them to section B of Isa, where they are awed by intricate carvings on altars and stone monuments depicting mythological scenes. Despite some structures being weathered and faded, wandering around these ancient artifacts sparks a deep sense of wonder and speculation about the lives of people from that era.

Navigating Personal Growth Through the Experience

Carl and Andy find their exploration to be reflective, peaceful, and an enriching journey that highlights personal growth and self-discovery amidst challenging conditions.

An Unexpected Border Control Issue

During their return trip to Tapachula, they face an unexpected complication near the Guatemalan border – a common area for frequent controls. They realize that they had forgotten their passports, leading them to be detained by authorities after showing phone copies.

Learning and Growing Through the Experience

The adventure is not without its trials; however, it ends on a positive note. As they reflect upon their experiences, they understand that stepping out of their comfort zones can lead to personal growth and a deeper appreciation for life’s simple joys.

I have to move off my sailboat because I am not allowed to stay there during yard time and find myself in a skanky hotel. Luckily, I get a visit from my friend Andy who is helping with making molds for In Mocean and some boat refit projects | Untie The Lines S7E03

Ahoy everyone!

My name is Nike and I have been living and sailing on my sailboat Karl since 2013. After a massive refit marathon, I finally cast off the lines and learnt to solo sail my 37-foot Reinke Super 10 that I called "Karl". I am publishing videos (at the moment every two weeks) about the ups and downs of living, repairing and sailing my boat.

Since January 2022, I have a new permanent crew member: my furry friend Boga. When I started out, I did not know much about boat repair or solo sailing. Since I am still out there, I hope that my story inspires others, to chase their dreams, even if they might think they are not cut out for it. There is always a way, so I'll see you out there!
