Welcome back! If you remember from last week, we had arrived at the South Pass of Fakarava, one of our all-time favorite places in the Tuamoto. Only to find that this world-class dive spot and the main reason for us returning this way around was under serious stress from a fairly extensive and even worldwide bleaching event. It was heart-wrenching to see this basically unfolding before our eyes, and since this was to be our last few days in all of the Tuamoto, AR pelo, we all pretty easily and quickly decided that we would rather just take the day off from well everything – diving, working, whatever – and just forgo any further diving and rather spend a day altogether above water and enjoying one final beach day at a nearby area called Pink Sands.
One memorable aspect of our day together was finding our own little deserted island for the day. And similar to many days lately, we couldn’t have wished for anything else and had no issue with just sitting back, letting time slip away, and watching all the small curious sharks just swim around our little Island oasis.
As much as we were sad to be leaving Fakarava South Pass, we knew it was time to head on to our next adventure – Tahiti. We had some incredible winds during our sail, and even though the seas were rough, we were making great progress. As we sailed into the night with just a jib up, Warren and I decided that this sail would be one for the books, and it truly was.
Setting Sail to Tahiti
Sailboats rely heavily on their supplies, and since we’ve been cruising with our boat Vah, we’ve run into our share of supply issues. One day before we were set to leave the Tuamoto Islands, we decided to head to the nearest town to stock up on food for our next leg of our journey. In total, our supplies consisted of two potatoes, shallot, onion, sweet potato, a couple eggs, canned chicken, cream cheese, frozen bananas (left from Maré’s visit), two burger patties and some parsley butter, plus some condiments and frozen food stashed away for rainy days. While it may seem like plenty, we were quickly realizing the truth that these supplies wouldn’t last much longer.
Knowing our limits on what was available in Fakarava to sustain us through this two-day sail to Tahiti, we took only what little fresh food and ingredients we had and rationed out every meal carefully during our journey. As it turned out, these decisions proved well-founded, as the wind provided a record-breaking speed on our fastest sail yet. We had always known that Vah could perform incredibly under racing conditions but seeing our average speed of seven knots for 170 miles over 24 hours left both Warren and I in awe.
Our Arrival in Tahiti
Incredibly, we safely made it around the southern tip of Fakarava and then turned downwind towards our destination – Papeete. And despite having to endure some difficult conditions during our sail, arriving at such a familiar anchorage in Maria was a huge accomplishment. While both Warren and I weren’t feeling 100%, being safe and happy as we slept in Tahiti was a triumph.
Over the next few days, we took care of small projects on Vah that needed attention. One particularly memorable moment was catching each other off-guard – just kidding! Well, okay maybe not. We also ventured out to some favorite spots and restaurants, finally indulging in some much-needed comfort food.
In this episode, we shared with you a bit about our record-breaking sail from Fakarava to Tahiti and all the incredible adventures we’ve been on leading up until now. What’s next for us remains a secret – but we promise it will be an adventure that takes us further into French Polynesia than ever before! So make sure to tune in every week so you don’t miss any of the excitement.
Welcome back to our sailing circumnavigation story! This week finds us still at the South Pass of Fakarava, one of our favorite atoll islands in the Tuamotus, and one of the best scuba diving spots in the world. Unfortunately we witness first hand the devastating effects of climate change, and decide to take our last days here alternatively for activities that don't bring tears to our eyes, and spend a whole day at Pink Sands Beach with fellow sailors Brian & Kazza on SV Delos. After that very enjoyable beach day we say goodbye to Fakarava and set sail for Tahiti, which in the past has typically taken us two days to complete, however some very strong winds combined with a faster boat now because of our clean bottom and folding props, we see out fastest speeds ever! We end up averaging 7 knots speed the whole way and drop anchor in the dark, luckily we know the area and the anchorage very well so there is no issues, and we get the wake up the next day nestled in the beauty and protection of Moorea's beautiful mountains.
