This is a HUGE Step forward! | Steel Boat Restoration | Ch 5 E 104

Wayward Life Sailing recently completed several significant projects as part of their steel boat restoration process, and one particularly large undertaking is currently in progress. The team – comprising Taran, Logan, and Max – has set their sights on revamping the AF cabin for enhanced insulation and reduced water vulnerability.

The Spray Foam Dilemma

<![CDATA[

In a previous episode, Taran began wrapping their steel boat in spray foam to ensure that it remains as structurally sound and weatherproof as possible. However, this first round of foam application did not quite meet all their requirements for various reasons.

<![CDATA[
  • The first problem was that there were a couple of spots where the spray foam wasn’t built up as high as they desired
  • During an earlier project that involved welding on their deck, they had to remove some existing spray foam in order to do so.

Solving the Bulkhead and Cabin Issues

    <![CDATA[

Upon realizing these inadequacies, Taran made it a priority to prepare all necessary areas for respraying foam. As they prepared everything, though, a new issue arose: they noticed that the bulkhead within the AF cabin also required spraying with foam.

    Weeks of Hard Work

    <![CDATA[
  • The team shifted their focus to putting the after cabin back together.
  • This would enable them to effectively install a new bulkhead, paving the way for subsequent spray foam applications
  • Subsequent work on the project entailed spraying the after cabin, completing a crucial phase in reinforcing and protecting this key section of their boat.

    Rewilding Wood with Steel Support

    <![CDATA[

To maintain and further fortify the structural integrity of their project, they added steel support where necessary. This strategic approach proved to be a smart decision as it reduced potential issues that may have arisen due to wood-water contact.

    Tackling Rot

    <![CDATA[
  • The epoxy applied by the team efficiently sealed off possible water entry points in specific areas of concern
  • Notably, these areas had shown signs of rot, but since drying out, such issues have been mitigated

    Making a ‘Wood Sandwich’

    <![CDATA[

To enhance the stability of their flooring above steel supports, Taran and his crew ingeniously created a ‘wood sandwich’ structure that secured everything firmly.

    The After Cabin Transformation

    <![CDATA[
  • They successfully put together all parts of the after cabin, including essential structures like bulkheads for optimum support and water management
