In this captivating episode of Wayward Life Sailing’s off-grid adventure, join Taran and Logan as they tackle a pivotal step in their journey – the installation of their solar panel system. This transformative project is more than just a technical challenge; it represents a crucial step towards achieving self-sufficiency on their steel boat.
The installation process didn’t come without its set of hurdles. Initially, the couple encountered difficulties in mounting the solar panel due to insufficient modifications on their boat’s structure. This unforeseen obstacle required creative problem-solving skills and highlighted the importance of planning and preparation before undertaking such a task.
After careful consideration, they decided on a 410-watt B facial solar panel from Luma, recognizing its efficiency and suitability for their needs. The original plan of having three 350-watt panels was revised due to size, weight, and age concerns. This new panel not only addressed these issues but also ensured more reliable performance on shorter days.
To secure the solar panel effectively, Taran and Logan fabricated custom brackets made from angle iron. These not only provided a sturdy mounting base but also allowed for adjustability to accommodate varying sun angles throughout the day.
Throughout this endeavor, professional help played a vital role in ensuring the success of the project. Jared and Austin from Harbor Chandler were instrumental in guiding Taran and Logan through electrical challenges. Their expertise and knowledge of Victron components significantly contributed to the efficiency and effectiveness of the final setup.
With the solar panel installed, the team was eager to test its performance. Despite initial low numbers due to a blanket covering and partially charged batteries, the system showed potential for success. As time went on, the panel consistently kept their batteries charged, even on cloudy days.
Though challenges arose and unexpected problems were encountered during this project, Taran and Logan persevered. This experience underscores the importance of adaptability, creativity, and seeking expert advice when navigating off-grid living aboard a steel boat.
We are so close to being ready to be independent from the dock! But we just have one last install project to finish before we are ready for that- our solar panel.
