The GROSSEST part of Boat Life | Ch 5 E 3

In this episode, Wayward Life Sailing’s Taran and Logan finally return to their boat in a marina, aiming to prepare it for living on and cruising once again. The first major project they tackle is reinstalling the boat’s head (toilet), which appears like an easy job but turns out to be a challenging process.Old Head PositionThe old toilet position required redesigning, as the original pedestal had several curves that made the project more difficult. They also planned to add another curve at the front of the pedestal but quickly figured out how to proceed.Rebuilding the Pedestal and Installing the ToiletThe duo rebuilt a new pedestal for the toilet, applying multiple layers of epoxy to make it one solid piece. This step aimed at preventing previous issues like seeping smells or liquid into woodwork. The newly created structure was easier to clean and maintain.Toilet InstallationThe toilet itself was then mounted and successfully connected, allowing them to use a functional toilet for the first time in a while.Encountering Further ChallengesThough initially successful, their victory was short-lived as they soon returned to find an unbearable smell. Upon inspection, the toilet wasn’t flushing properly due to a hose-related issue, potentially caused by the pump. The Nut DilemmaTaran had to venture south to acquire a specific nylon nut essential for repairing the toilet. Unfortunately, finding the right metric-sized nut proved difficult; even online options were unavailable in Canada. Luckily, they found an alternative solution through a friend who had the exact same pump and was willing to part with it.Pump ModificationUpon reaching Maple Bay, Taran attempted to dismantle the pump to retrieve a crucial washer without hauling the entire smelly unit. Despite getting it partially disassembled, he couldn’t remove the washer, necessitating bringing back the entire pump for further cleaning and maintenance on their boat.Pump TroubleshootingAfter some troubleshooting, they realized that two scored valves within the pump were causing the issue. These valves control sealing for sucking water in and out of the toilet. They applied silicone grease to remedy this situation temporarily.Final FixFinally, they managed to solve the problem by applying silicone grease. This simple yet effective solution successfully enhanced their toilet’s water intake. After addressing this final issue, Taran and Logan were relieved to finally enjoy a functional boat toilet without dealing with previous complications.ConclusionThe duo faced numerous challenges in rebuilding their boat’s toilet, from redesigning the pedestal to fixing pump-related issues. Their perseverance and innovative solutions enabled them to overcome each hurdle successfully, showcasing their resilience in boat life.Next EpisodeDon’t miss the next episode, where they promise to tackle less “grody” projects.
