The Start of an Adventure
The group’s exciting voyage begins after several weeks spent cruising remote and mostly uninhabited Islands. Having decided it was time for a slow reintegration into society, Max and Chloe, along with Jasper and Georgie, set sail from Fakarava to Tahiti aboard the beautiful Classic Yawl. This sailing experience turned out to be an absolute thrill as they enjoyed not only the serene beauty of the South Pacific but also had fun navigating a different boat after their time on Elixir.Investigating the Engine Issue
However, upon arriving in Tahiti, the group faced an unexpected problem when Chloe and Max noticed their engine warning light was beeping, and the engine overheated. Not wanting to delay their adventure further, they quickly dropped anchor to investigate. The Engine Impeller’s Role
Upon inspection, Max suspected that the impeller was at fault, as it is an essential component of their boat’s cooling system. The rubber pump circulates seawater to cool the engine and prevent overheating. After removing the cap for the impeller, they discovered one blade missing due to damage. With a quick fix in place, including fishing out the missing piece, replacing the impeller, and tightening up the bolts, Max got the engine running smoothly again, showcasing essential boat maintenance knowledge.Tahiti’s Enchanting Beauty
As the engine problem was resolved, the crew couldn’t help but appreciate Tahiti’s dramatic volcanic peaks and vibrant natural surroundings. This picturesque island boasts protective lagoons for sheltered anchorage in its stunning waters and surrounding reef passes creating perfect waves for surfing enthusiasts. The Perfect Surf Spot
Thrilled by the challenge, Max surfed Tahiti’s powerful wave breaking over a shallow reef, providing an adrenaline-pumping ride. For those familiar with the cold and inconsistent Beach breaks of the UK, the sheer power of these waves left Max feeling invigorated.A Return to Fakarava
For a brief respite from their journey, Max and Chloe took a break from Elixir and embarked on a flight back to Fakarava where they had previously sailed from. This hour-long trip allowed them to reflect on the amazing experiences that surrounded their adventure in French Polynesia.Meeting Jasper and Georgie
Upon returning, they reunited with their friends Jasper and Georgie, who are both professional sailors living a monk-like existence aboard the Classic Yawl Latifa. Constructed by William Fife III in 1936, Latifa is recognized as one of the most beautiful boats ever built. An Unforgettable Sail on Latifa
Sailing together aboard Latifa allowed Max and Chloe to witness firsthand Jasper and Georgie’s exceptional boat maintenance techniques and love for sailing. Their shared passion led them to various incredible destinations, further strengthening their bonds.Enjoying Ice Cream on Passage
Despite the challenges faced during this epic voyage, laughter and shared joyous moments like indulging in ice cream on passage created unforgettable memories for all aboard.Unforgettable Sailing Moments
As their journey continued under a starry sky, smooth sailing and pleasant motion inside the traditional wooden yawl led to one of Max’s most peaceful nights at sea. This serene experience was enhanced by the constant sound of water trickling along Latifa’s exterior hull.A Return to Elixir
Upon bidding farewell to Jasper and Georgie in Tahiti, Max and Chloe returned to Elixir with renewed appreciation for the incredible places they had experienced together on their journey around the world.Exploring More Society Islands
This unforgettable experience in Tahiti only fueled Max and Chloe’s passion to continue exploring more of the beautiful Society Islands, taking viewers along for an unparalleled adventure filled with awe-inspiring natural beauty, exhilarating waves, and life-changing experiences.Welcome to another update from Elixir's voyage around the world!
We've just made landfall in Tahiti, the capital of the Society Islands in French Polynesia.
In this episode, leave Elixir in Tahiti, and fly back to Fakarava in the Tuamotus to hop on the beautiful Latifa, and repeat our passage to Tahiti.
Latifa is a classic yawl, designed and built by William Fife in 1936. It was a novel experience to sail on another boat, especially one as beautiful as Elixir.
