Welcome to another captivating update from Elixir’s journey around the world! In this exciting episode, we find ourselves at a thrilling juncture as we arrive in French Polynesia after an arduous 23-day sail across the vast Pacific Ocean from Mexico. Our spirits are high and our wanderlust is quenched as we spent the past month exploring the breathtaking islands of the Marquesas, an experience that felt surreal amidst the vast expanse of the open ocean.
The Marquesans are exceptionally warm and hospitable people who never failed to ensure we left their islands with as much fresh fruit as our vessels could carry. We visited four different islands before setting sail for the next archipelago of the Tuamotus, a daunting 450-mile voyage to the south. The transition from the volcanic ridges of the Marquesas to the unique landscape of the Tuamotus would prove fascinating.
The wind gods favored us, pushing Elixir with steady force, ideal for a reaching journey. Our navigation charts estimated the trip would take approximately 3 to 4 days, depending on wind and current conditions. With spirits soaring under the balmy blue skies and minimal chop, it was indeed an idyllic day for sailing. Chloe ventured out with our drone and spotted Manta rays gliding gracefully through the turquoise depths.
A day into our voyage, luck shone upon us as we reeled in a magnificent tuna. An excellent haul for a meal that would sustain us through the journey ahead and ensure no bounty went to waste. Captain Nick expertly guided the preservation process of salting and drying the catch to extend its shelf life on board.
With 121 islands scattered across an area roughly the size of Europe, navigating between island groups necessitated multi-day passages that were commonplace for sailors in French Polynesia. We entered the Tuamotu archipelago with a blend of anticipation and caution. Our arrival at the atoll brought not only awe-inspiring vistas but also navigational challenges that kept us on our toes.
The Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl’s attempt to cross the Pacific on a reed raft from Peru and make landfall in the Tuamotus in 1947 has gone down in history. We were not far, just less than a mile away from where he made this remarkable landfall, commemorated by a plaque dedicated to his incredible journey. As avid readers of his works, we couldn’t resist making a pilgrimage to the site where he concluded his odyssey.
The Tuamotu atolls were home to vibrant coral reefs teeming with life. This underwater world was entirely different from anything I had witnessed before, with remarkable clarity that revealed a mesmerizing spectrum of colors and textures. After years of freediving in the Atlantic, Chloe and I couldn’t contain our excitement as we took our first steps into scuba diving under expert guidance from our friend Brian.
Despite the allure of the Tuamotus, challenges arose. Our shared joy was cut short by an unfortunate encounter with coral and equipment mishaps. A broken shark pin on our outboard engine propeller coupled with a snapped paddle while rowing required ingenuity and skill to overcome these obstacles.
In an unforeseen twist, we also tackled an electrical issue with our starter motor. Our collective efforts in cleaning and checking the connections ultimately paid off as Elixir’s engine roared to life once more.
Looking back, our experiences in the South Pacific are a treasure trove of memories. Each day unfolded new adventures and tested our resourcefulness, all within a backdrop of jaw-dropping beauty. Our camaraderie with fellow sailors and explorers added to the enriching tapestry of this incredible journey around the world.

Welcome to another update from Elixir's voyage around the world!
In this video, we continue our voyage of sailing across the South Pacific.
We wave goodbye to the volcaninc peaks of the Marquesas, and set sail for the flat atolls of the Tuamotu archipelago.
The 450 mile passage starts of smooth, with flat seas and amazing sunsets. We then experienced a sequence of squalls, bringing rough seas, big waves and a lot of water on the deck.
After about four days, we arrived in the Tuamotus, and again, it felt as if we had arrived in paradise.
