Off Grid Living in the Tuamotus Atolls – Elixir Voyage
Welcome to another exciting update from Elixir Voyage, where we are embarking on a breathtaking journey through the South Pacific’s most enchanting paradise, the Tuamotu Atolls. Join Max and his friends as they immerse themselves in off-grid living among these remote islands. Prepare for an adventure filled with uncharted exploration, challenging encounters, and breathtaking discoveries.
Main Points Discussed
In this video episode, we’ll explore:
- The allure of off-grid living in the untouched Tuamotu Atolls,
- Adapting to island life amidst stunning yet challenging natural landscapes,
- Finding and enjoying local delicacies like coconuts and parrot fish while practicing responsible fishing,
- Navigating the vastness of the ocean and exploring marine life in its pristine form through free diving, spearfishing, and shark encounters at ‘The Wall of Sharks’.
- The importance of selecting safe anchorage locations amid changing weather conditions and the lessons learned along the way.
Off-Grid Life in The Tuamotu Atolls
During our time in these remote islands, we have been living an entirely off-grid lifestyle. There’s no sign of civilization for miles around; just pure unadulterated nature at its best. It has been a while since we’ve seen any form of human habitation, and the beauty that surrounds us continues to be astonishing.
The Unique Features of Tuamotu Atolls
Characterized by their circular shape with a protected lagoon on the inside, not all atolls are easily accessible. However, some do provide deep passes for sailing boats like Elixir to find sheltered anchorage on the inside.
Sustaining Off-Grid Living
In these remote areas, food sourcing can be challenging; however, coconuts from the palm trees dotting the islands’ beaches are an easy and delicious source of nutrition. Max goes above and beyond to scale the trees and retrieve them with skill.
Thrilling Encounters at ‘The Wall of Sharks’
The South Pass of Fakarava is a diving hotspot due to its concentrated marine life as water flows in and out through reef passes. Here, we find ourselves surrounded by numerous black tip reef sharks during free diving expeditions.
The Challenge of Changing Weather Conditions
Anchoring within the atolls brings its unique challenges, such as navigating choppy waters when weather changes swing the wind around unexpectedly. Safe navigation requires constant vigilance and strategic positioning to find suitable anchorage locations amid these conditions.
Embracing Off-Grid Adventure
This journey highlights how Max and his crew are embracing an off-grid existence, discovering their limits while also respecting the natural world around them. From hunting for food in unique ways to diving amidst vibrant marine life, each moment offers a glimpse into what truly off-grid living means in these isolated yet captivating parts of the world.

Welcome to another update from Elixir's voyage around the world!
Days turned into weeks as we made our way through the uninhabited atolls of the Tuamotus. They were your typical desert island, with white sand and palm trees, and it felt very remote. And after sailing across the Pacific, it felt like we'd deserved it.
Our supplies were beginning to run low, and we made the most of the abundance of fish an coconuts.
I still can't get over the incredible beauty of these islands.
