Giant Waves in Portugal – Sailing From Peniche to The Canaries (EP2)

After crossing The Bay of Biscay, we made landfall in Spain. Mid-winter lows were rolling off the North Atlantic and battering Finisterre. It was two weeks before a weather window allowed us to continue south.

We stopped off in Peniche, Portugal and indulged in waves, espressos and pastel de natas. The WSL Nazare Tow Challenge ran during our stay — completely changing our perspective on big waves. After witnessing guys charging these giants, we all could agree that what we were doing was neither scary nor brave in comparison.

On a sunny afternoon we cast off our lines from Peniche and began the 600-mile journey down to The Canary Islands.
