Tula and Billy’s Challenging Passage Without Fuel

In their recent video, Tula and Billy recount a challenging 100-mile sailing journey from the US Virgin Islands (USVI) to St. Martin, facing the daunting task of making it with very little fuel.

A Planned Day Trip Turns into an Extended Journey

Initially planning a day trip, Tula was in charge of preparing for the journey, including checking fuel levels. Unfortunately, she miscalculated and didn’t account for a longer distance or more extended sailing without sufficient wind to propel them forward efficiently.

Running Out of Fuel

With only one 5-gallon jerry jug of diesel left and no spare, Tula and Billy ran out of fuel just 30 miles away from St. Martin. At this point, they were forced to rely solely on sailing, which proved challenging as the wind was too weak for an efficient journey.

Learning Lessons

Tula and Billy’s experience taught them valuable lessons about trip planning, fuel management, and the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations. Here are their key takeaways:

The Journey Continues

Despite running out of fuel and facing an arduous 12-hour wait for any wind, Tula and Billy managed to reach St. Martin safely. They expressed their gratitude for having learned these lessons and recognized that it could have been a more difficult situation if not for Billy’s sailing skills.

Moving Forward

With their destination still Grenada, Tula and Billy are well aware of the challenges that lay ahead. They plan to continue navigating through the Caribbean while embracing each new experience as an opportunity for growth.

A Final Thought

Tula and Billy concluded their video with a tip: always have fuel on hand. Although they love relying on wind power, having a backup plan in terms of engine power ensures peace of mind during long passages.

Locations

  • US Virgin Islands (USVI)
  • St. Martin/St Maarten

Tula and Billy are currently making their way south through the Caribbean, navigating toward Grenada in preparation for hurricane season.

In this video we planned to take advantage of a light Southerly wind shift and sail from St. John, USVI to Saint Maarten. I (Billy) like to take the opportunity to see how well the boat can sail when the tankage is getting empty and in this case that means trying to sail in very light winds rather than motor. I though we still had enough fuel in the tank IF the wind was too light and we HAD to motor. We didn't have enough fuel...
