Riding out Record Breaking HURRICANE BERYL on our Catamaran in Grenada Mangroves (ONE HOUR Extended)

Riding Out Hurricane Beryl on a Catamaran in the Grenada Mangroves

In this episode, we share our incredible journey of riding out Hurricane Beryl on our catamaran in the Grenada mangroves. This Category 4 hurricane presented numerous challenges and forced us to make difficult decisions under pressure.

The Decision to Stay or Go

As the storm approached, we faced a critical choice: stay in our chosen anchorage in Grenada or continue our journey to Trinidad. After weighing various factors, including safety concerns and potential risks, we ultimately decided to stay put.

Preparing for the Storm

We spent the day before the storm arrived preparing our boat for the incoming hurricane. This involved securing the vessel, taking down sails, and setting up additional anchors to ensure maximum stability.

Safely Riding Out the Storm

Once everything was set, we hunkered down on our catamaran and waited for Hurricane Beryl to pass. Throughout the storm, we monitored weather updates, managed shifting wind conditions, and stayed in communication with nearby boats.

Reflections on the Experience

The days following the storm were a time of reflection. We discussed our decision-making process, assessed potential mistakes or successes, and considered what we could have done differently to better prepare for future hurricanes.

Helping Others

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, we reached out to local animal shelters and organizations to assist with their recovery efforts. We also launched a fundraising campaign for affected individuals and businesses in Grenada.

Lessons Learned

We learned that preparing for a hurricane requires meticulous planning, adaptability, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. By sharing our story and experiences, we hope to encourage other sailors to learn from our journey and be better prepared when faced with similar challenges.

Remember that even in the most unpredictable situations, staying informed, preparing your vessel properly, and having a strong support system can make all the difference in ensuring your safety during these events.

The Aftermath

While we were fortunate to have emerged from Hurricane Beryl with minimal damage, we are acutely aware of the challenges faced by those in the northern Grenada region and other islands affected by the storm. If you’d like to support the recovery efforts in this area, please consider donating directly to local organizations or participating in our fundraiser.

Thank you so much for watching🙏 Thank you everyone who sent encouraging messages during this high stress time. Sailing in front of record breaking hurricane Beryl was not something we imagined ourselves ever having to do but Mother Nature wanted to start hurricane season out in a big way and lots of decisions had to be made. We decided on a plan and stuck with it and luckily made it to a safe harbor just in time to get spider webbed in the mangroves. We were so fortunate that we were safe and had no damage but just 30 miles north it was a completely different outcome.
