Racing the FASTEST CATAMARAN IN THE BAHAMAS (and she’s over 30 years old)

Are you ready for a sailing adventure like no other? Join us as we embark on an exhilarating journey through the picturesque waters of the Bahamas, racing our fastest catamaran in one of the most thrilling regattas ever!

Racing the Fastest Catamaran in the Bahamas

Our 1991 Locke Crowther-designed catamaran, Kite, is more than just a beautiful vessel; it’s a race-ready beast with an impressive history. Built and lovingly restored by our friend Mike in New Zealand, this catamaran boasts unique design features that set it apart from other boats on the water.

Our Race Day

The day of our first race began with anticipation and a touch of nervousness, but as we took to the starting line in Georgetown, Bahamas, our confidence grew. Our practice run during the preliminary inshore race the previous day had us prepared and eager to take on Stocking Island’s challenge.

The Catamaran’s Design Features

What makes Kite so special? First off, it’s incredibly lightweight, thanks to Mike’s attention to detail. This boat features a long waterline length of 45 feet with narrow hull beams for its size, a monster bowsprit for flying larger head sails like the asymmetric spinnaker or the Code Zero that we just rigged up before the race. It also sports a rotating mast, which functions as the leading edge of the mainsail, making it extremely efficient.

Our Race Strategy

We planned to start our race by flying the Code Zero downwind through the starting line. As we approached the first mark, we adjusted our sails, switching to a reaching course with the jib up and Code Zero furled. We continued this strategy for about half a mile before tacking upwind along Stocking Island’s shore.

The Race Course

The racecourse took us first clockwise around the island, giving us an exciting downwind leg in the flat waters of the Bahamian Sea. We then headed upwind through the ocean waves before cutting across to a second stretch where we’d return to the starting line after completing our approximately 20-mile route.

Winning All Three Races

We faced a variety of challenges on that sunny day in the Bahamas, including rough winds and tight tacks. Despite the hurdles, our team performed exceptionally well, crossing the finish line first in all three races! We even managed to pass most of the boats that had started earlier than us as we raced along.

A Huge Thank You

Winning those races would not have been possible without our incredible crew, Tula and Mike. Their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm on the water made all the difference. A huge thank you to them for their unwavering support and determination!
