Facing Headwinds and Storms Trying to Sail to One of the Furthest Remote Bahama Islands

Okay guys, we are about to set off on another new adventure today trying to make our way to a place we have not been before. We are still in Georgetown, and the weather has been kind of holding us here longer than we had kind of hoped. But it’s a super cool place, but our time to be back in Florida is coming so quickly. There are two islands we still really want to get to and we only have about a week to do it. So, we are crossing our fingers that the weather holds out and we’re able to do that. But we want to make our way to San Salvador and to Rum.We’re going to leave today and we’re going to try to make it to at least Conception, and then hopefully the next day we can hop to San Salvador. It’s been crazy windy, but it looks like there’s going to be a couple of days of calm weather coming soon where we can hopefully dive these outer islands where very few people go.The Sailing Conditions and the JourneyToday’s sailing is through more deep water that should be great for fishing. We’ll get the right lines ready, we’ll get them in the water but first, we got to get going. We got to raise the sales. The forecasting condition today are 15 knots out of the southeast and that means we’re going to be on like a close reach if that angle stays true. And yeah, we’ll probably go full man up if that wind speed stays true. Which, yeah, right now it’s saying 14 knots true wind should be pretty good as long as the, as long as it doesn’t get above 20 knots. We should be all right. And we have like 38 nautical miles to go or so I believe. But at least the wind has been pretty good and consistent. It’s definitely more comfortable than if it was completely on the nose, especially since we are not making very good progress speed wise, but it’s still better than what we’ve had lately. The Diving Adventure in San Salvador IslandLittle did we know that this trip to Conception and San Salvador islands would be one for the books. We got anchored before a wild storm blew through, making it a rough day. However, it was worth it because stunningly beautiful San Salvador won in my opinion as the prettiest reefs we’ve seen so far.Exploring Bonefish Bay and Club MedUpon reaching this beautiful island, it seemed like an untouched paradise. We enjoyed calm winds and crystal-clear waters while witnessing birds flying all around us. It was a far cry from the busy club med environment nearby.Solving the Screen Problem for the Helm WindowsUnfortunately, our screen attempt did not turn out tight enough due to its odd shape and material. Bugs were coming in, making it necessary for us to figure out a better solution. The Challenges of Anchoring Near Coral HeadsAnother challenge was finding an anchorage free of coral heads. As we came in at night, it proved tricky but thanks to our skills and experience, we found a safe spot with no sunlights. The next morning woke us up at the serene beauty of Club Med’s surroundings.Eating Fresh Fish and Lobster on the IslandAs expected, the fish print came out quite delicious. Along with our freshly caught fish, lobster tail, sushi made from yellow Jack, and conch for dinner made it a night to remember.Potential Risks of Eating Locally Caught Fish in the BahamasDespite enjoying the taste of our catches, we were cautious about potential risks such as Ciguatera poisoning. This toxin accumulates in predatory fish like groupers after consuming smaller infected fish containing a specific algae.Researching More About Safe Fishing PracticesGiven this knowledge, we planned to do more research before possibly eating the tiger grouper. Checking with locals and investigating if there have been cases of Ciguatera poisoning in San Salvador with this type of fish would give us a better understanding.Future Plans and Hurricane Season StrategyThough we would miss the beautiful islands of Bahamas, our warranty work and sister’s wedding in Florida called us back. Panama was one destination on our list for hurricane season but no plans were concrete yet.ConclusionIn conclusion, this adventure to some of the remotest islands in the Bahamas has taught us a lot about facing challenges head-on. Despite stormy weather and unexpected obstacles like fish toxicity risks, we were able to overcome them with careful planning and safety precautions. And of course, not forgetting the incredible underwater world at Conception and San Salvador Islands! So let’s not wait any longer. Let us know which island is your favorite spot among all those we have visited, by commenting down below. We’d love to hear your stories as well! Join us as we set sail to San Salvador, a little Bahamian island off the beaten path where very few sailors ever stop. It was a rough ride getting there but we are so glad we made the stop! San Sal takes the win for the prettiest coral reefs we have seen yet!
p.s. this was filmed early March when lobster season was still open:)
