Exploring the $1 Trawler Deal
In this exciting episode, we dive headfirst into a potentially one-in-a-million deal – a $100 tler at an auction site. Join us as Billy and I follow our love for boat deals from our dads, leading us to investigate this 2004 57 ft Millennium Trawler.
A Closer Look at the Millennium Trawler
The boat, a 2004 Millennium Trawler with dimensions of 57 ft in length, 16 ft beam, and 5.5 ft draft, features two staterooms, two heads, two showers, capacity for 600 gallons of fuel, and 200 gallons of water. It is powered by twin inboard diesel John Deere engines model 6061 with a 12 kW Onan generator on board. Despite the photos suggesting good condition at a starting bid of $1, the catch lies in its sunken state and non-functioning components.
The Journey Inside
We embarked on this adventure with excitement but faced several challenges, from mold in the boat to a lack of headroom and functioning systems. Our first room, or what we deemed the guest room, revealed an unusual layout for such a spacious vessel.
The Cost Factor
With the starting bid at $1, the deal seemed too good to be true. Upon closer inspection, especially looking into the engine repair costs that ran up to almost $60,000 with twin John Deere engines needing complete rebuilds and freight considerations, the initial value plummeted. Storage fees for a boat of this size in dock or hauled out added significant expenses, making the project seem less enticing.
Pros & Cons
The Millennium Marine is known for constructing sturdy, commercial fishing boats that have proven durability in harsh weather conditions. Despite a unique layout, the design boasts substantial advantages such as a large salon, a big cockpit, and ample space on the fly bridge. However, the living area was found to be cramped, with one significant bedroom being small.
The Decision
While this project could result in a very valuable boat if done right, the complexities of its unique layout, mold infestation, and necessary engine rebuilds posed substantial hurdles. Considering these factors and the desire for personal comfort within our projects, we chose to pass on this deal.
Learning from the Experience
The essence of this journey wasn’t just about finding a new boat. It’s an opportunity to understand and learn from such deals, which often trap others into irreversible financial burdens or incomplete projects that mar the reputation for those looking to undertake similar ventures.
