We Sailed To The Most Isolated Place On Earth / Sailing To Fiji Pt 3 Ep 170

In the third part of our passage to Fiji, we set sail from the South Manua Reef towards Savu Savu. During this journey, we experimented with a new sailing technique and learned about the differences between going directly downwind versus zigzagging.

New Sailing Technique

During our time sailing around New Zealand, we witnessed another boat that was traveling downwind and decided to try the wing-on-wing or main sail and Genoa downwind technique. This technique involved going straight down with the wind while having a more comfortable experience on the boat. However, upon testing it ourselves, we found that it was slower and less efficient than sailing on a broad reach.

Broad Reach Technique

We opted to try out the broad reach technique, which involves keeping the wind at 120 degrees from your boat. This zigzag pattern helped us stay on a more efficient course while providing greater comfort than sailing straight downwind.

The Journey Towards Savu Savu

We set sail from South Manua Reef and headed towards the beautiful island of Savu Savu. During our journey, we took note of how comfortable it was sailing downwind with the swell behind us, allowing us to ‘surf’ along the waves while making good progress.

In this episode we stop over mid passage in one of the most remote places on Earth!
